This program provides an overview of how communication is affected and altered by dementia and similar cognitive impairments, what signs and symptoms you may observe, and challenges you may encounter when trying to communicate. Participants will walk away with practical, research-based strategies for overcoming these obstacles, along with greater confidence when interacting with individuals with dementia, whether in a professional or personal setting. At the completion of this session, the participant will be able to:

Describe how dementia can impact someone’s ability to communicate.

Predict the interpersonal challenges you may encounter when communicating with someone who has dementia and how to overcome them.

Demonstrate ways to effectively connect and communicate with individuals with dementia and similar cognitive impairments.

Instructor Bio:

Jayda Bruscoe has been the director of Community Relations at Armbrook Village since January 2023. She has worked in the assisted living industry for about three years and is also a certified dementia practitioner. She attended Merrimack College where she graduated with her bachelor's degree in Business Administration with concentrations in both Marketing and Management, as well as a minor in Women's and Gender Studies. Bruscoe grew up in Western Massachusetts and takes great pride in her current work with the aging population. She is looking forward to continuing to help older adults maintain their quality of life and independence.

Julie Waniewski has been the executive director at Armbrook Village since January 2023, and prior to that she was the director of community relations for about seven years. She grew up in Feeding Hills, Mass., and currently resides in Springfield with her husband Russ. She attended Bentley University and has a bachelor's degree in Business Management. She is also a certified dementia practitioner. Her passion for helping our elders live their best life, coupled with a grandmother who had dementia, drove her decision to enter the assisted living Industry. She also has an extensive career in hospitality, property management, retail, and residential and commercial leasing.
